Plus, you can snuggle up under it! The first quilt I published was my Christmas Cards quilt. It was a really fun and interesting experience. I got the idea one day that I wanted to try to get published in a magazine so I started playing around with ideas and designs. At the time, I used Microsoft Publisher to do my designs. (Now, I also use paper and pencil and colored pencils.) I had made a similar pattern to Christmas Cards early on in my quilting days and I really liked it and wanted to recreate it.

I thought something holiday-related would be catchier so I submitted a Christmas version, Christmas Cards, and a Valentine’s Day version, Love Notes. Quilty Magazine liked the Christmas Cards version and it was a go. I really had no idea how it worked, but if the quilt is not solids or scrappy, typically an upcoming fabric line is used so people can recreate the quilt as you’ve made it. So a fabric line was suggested and I plugged those fabrics in my design. The first fabric was definitely not what I wanted and, thankfully, they didn’t like it either! The next fabric they suggested was a Christmas fabric by Riley Blake Designs. It was perfected and ended up being just the thing. The editor gave me my deadline and Riley Blake sent me the fabric and I got to work.

I took my time and made it perfect and even did an improv scrappy back using my left over fabrics.

I ended up finishing my binding during our 18-hour car ride to Ocean City, New Jersey, for vacation and my sister helped me rush it to the post office to get it sent out.

Quilty Magazine sent me an issue just before it came out on the stands but I still went and found it at Joann Fabrics and showed people in the store. It was pretty fun!
