One of my favorite things about sewing pillows is that they make such an impact to your decor with very little effort.

They are perfect for beginners and advanced sewists alike. They are scrap friendly and you can complete them in just a couple of hours! The patterns are all live in my FourRobbins Etsy shop and are available as an instant PDF download.

Patchwork Heart Pillow Cover

This first pattern is the Patchwork Heart Pillow Cover. This one is perfect for using up lots of scraps. Just pick your color palette and start sewing! The patterns include all your cutting and sewing instructions as well as finishing your pillow cover with a hidden zipper and adding binding for a nice, clean finish. You can make them as is for a standard 16×16 pillow or add a border to accommodate larger pillow forms. As for the pillow inserts, I’ve gotten them at Joann Fabrics using a 40% off coupon as well as on Amazon.

Patchwork Heart Pillow Cover

Next is XOXO Hugs & Kisses pillow cover. I made this one in reds and blacks but you could really make any of these pillows in other colors to keep around all year or in favorite colors for a bedroom pillow. Hmmm… I just might have to make some in blues for MY bedroom.

XOXO Pillow Cover

Next, is my favorite, Rainbow Heart pillow cover. I love a rainbow! I was thinking of doing some of these in some ombre, with colors or tones that shade into each other. Stay tuned. 🙂

I hope you love these fun patterns as much as I loved creating them! You can find them on sale for 20% off their already low price through February 14th! Enjoy!

Star Crossed Quilt Pattern https://fourrobbins.com/star-crossed-quilt-pattern/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=star-crossed-quilt-pattern Thu, 27 Aug 2020 06:00:00 +0000 http://box5503.temp.domains/~fourrobb/?p=347 One of my all time favorite quilts is Star Crossed. I wrote this pattern in 2014 and it was the first one I officially wrote and packaged for sale way back before I had my cool new logo. LOL

My Star Crossed Pattern hanging in Janie Lou Fabrics!

It was a pretty exciting experience. I came up with the design in publisher using some classic quilt blocks and then played around with different fabrics. I had fallen in love with these Baby Jane fabrics by Eric & Julie Comstock for Moda Fabrics
and really wanted to find something to make using the reds and aquas of the line.

Baby Jane by Eric & Julie Comstock for Moda Fabrics

Aren’t these pretty? I wish they were still available. I’d love to make another quilt with them!

I did a few versions to test it out my numbers scrappy and in Bonnie & Camille’s April Showers.

Once I knew all my measurements were good and everything was working out, I wrote up my pattern. Then I went ahead and cut into my Baby Jane fabrics and made my quilt from my pattern.

My finished top was so beautiful!

All basted and ready to be quilted! I like to pin baste. How about you? How do you baste?

I free motion quilted it with an all over stipple pattern. For this quilt, I was using my domestic Janome Memory Craft 4900. Now, I sew on a Janome Memory Craft 8900. I can’t tell you how much more I love that larger throat space and the automatic thread cutter. How did I do without them?

I pieced the back with my leftover fabric and some extra blocks. I had an embroidery sewing machine at the time so I did a fancy label. It was a fun machine but at the time, my son needed a new computer and we were tight on extra $ so I sold it to get him his desktop set up. He has gotten way more use out of his computer than I would have out of the embroidery though so it was worth it!

Next, I got some volunteers to test my pattern. They all did a great job and were so appreciated!

Star Crossed by Shauna Trueblood

Star Crossed by Monica Smith
Star Crossed by Kyndra Brown

Zrinka from Owls and Co finished hers and it blew me away. She also took lots of beautiful pictures.

Her color choices were bright and fun and modern. I still want to make one like this!

It is the coolest thing to see what people come up with with your patterns! I also found this one searching the internet one day by Carol M. Clemmons. How pretty!

Since then I made some little version of the blocks and turned them into pin cushions. You can find these in my Shop.

And Star Crossed even got to be in St. Louis Modern Quilt Guild‘s first quilt show!

Want to make one of your own? You can find the pattern in my Shop in pdf and paper versions.

I’d love to see yours! Use the hashtag #starcrossedquilt on social media so I can find you.

Have a great day!

Off the Grid Modern Quilt Tutorial https://fourrobbins.com/off-the-grid-modern-quilt-tutorial/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=off-the-grid-modern-quilt-tutorial Thu, 30 Jul 2020 10:57:30 +0000 http://box5503.temp.domains/~fourrobb/?p=290 A few weeks ago my guild (St. Louis Modern Quilt Guild) brought in Heather Jones to give a trunk show and to teach a couple of weekend classes. I attended the trunk show, which was great, and then took her class, From Inspiration to Design. We were to bring graph paper, pencils, markers, and an inspirational photograph. The idea is not to reproduce the photo but to draw elements out of the photo and come up with an inspired design. Here is the photo I chose.

There is really so much going on in it and I could probably come up with so many more things and, in fact, I have a couple in mind. What I really focused on, though, were all the bright colors and the uneven gray tiles on the ground.

It was no surprise to me that my first drawing was symmetrical and a little rigid but I really wanted to step out of my comfort zone so I tried something else and I’m so happy with how it turned out!

If you’d like to make your own, the fabric requirements, cutting instructions, and layout follows. This quilt measures 60″ x 60″. If you’d like to print the cutting instructions and chart, you can find a printable pdf here. You can print out a sheet of pattern piece markers here.

Fabric Requirements & Cutting Instructions

Backing: 3-5/8 yards

Batting: Twin Size 72″ x 90″ or 2 yard cut off 90″ wide roll

Binding: 1/2 yard for 2.5″ strips

Quilt Layout

1) Set aside W1, W2, and W14 pieces.

2) Following layout, construct the 5 inner columns as shown.

3) Add W14 sashing pieces in between columns.

4) Add W2 borders and then W1.

5) Quilt as desired.

I’d love to see yours if you make one. Use the hashtag #offthegridquilt so I can find you!

A couple of the fastest quilts I’ve made and I just love them!

First is O Christmas Tree! It is the perfect size throw at 64″ x 64″ and you can find the digital pdf here or get the paper version here.

]]> 406 Christmas Cards is the Holiday Quilt You Want to Make! https://fourrobbins.com/christmas-cards-is-the-holiday-quilt-you-want-to-make/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=christmas-cards-is-the-holiday-quilt-you-want-to-make Tue, 05 Nov 2019 23:57:23 +0000 http://box5503.temp.domains/~fourrobb/?p=410 This Christmas Cards quilt is quick and easy to make and looks festive and beautiful decorating your space. Plus, you can snuggle up under it! The first quilt I published was my Christmas Cards quilt. It was a really fun and interesting experience. I got the idea one day that I wanted to try to get published in a magazine so I started playing around with ideas and designs. At the time, I used Microsoft Publisher to do my designs. (Now, I also use paper and pencil and colored pencils.) I had made a similar pattern to Christmas Cards early on in my quilting days and I really liked it and wanted to recreate it.

I thought something holiday-related would be catchier so I submitted a Christmas version, Christmas Cards, and a Valentine’s Day version, Love Notes. Quilty Magazine liked the Christmas Cards version and it was a go. I really had no idea how it worked, but if the quilt is not solids or scrappy, typically an upcoming fabric line is used so people can recreate the quilt as you’ve made it. So a fabric line was suggested and I plugged those fabrics in my design. The first fabric was definitely not what I wanted and, thankfully, they didn’t like it either! The next fabric they suggested was a Christmas fabric by Riley Blake Designs. It was perfected and ended up being just the thing. The editor gave me my deadline and Riley Blake sent me the fabric and I got to work.

I took my time and made it perfect and even did an improv scrappy back using my left over fabrics.

I ended up finishing my binding during our 18-hour car ride to Ocean City, New Jersey, for vacation and my sister helped me rush it to the post office to get it sent out.

Quilty Magazine sent me an issue just before it came out on the stands but I still went and found it at Joann Fabrics and showed people in the store. It was pretty fun!

You can find this pattern in my Etsy shop in paper form or downloadable PDF so you can make one for yourself this holiday season! I’d love to see yours, so use #christmascardsquilt on social media so I can find you!

Scrappy Twists and Turns Quilt Pattern https://fourrobbins.com/scrappy-twists-and-turns-quilt-pattern-2/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=scrappy-twists-and-turns-quilt-pattern-2 Fri, 05 Jul 2019 02:39:09 +0000 http://box5503.temp.domains/~fourrobb/?p=278 Quite a few years ago I wrote my Twists & Turns pattern. I used Angela Walters first fabric line and really loved how it turned out. Not long after, I gifted it as a wedding present planning to make another for myself.

Fast forward I think five years and I’ve finally finished it! LOL.

One of the problems with writing patterns using one specific fabric line is that when the fabric is no longer available, people can’t reproduce the pattern to look like yours and many people want to do just that. This time around I’ve used a collection of prints from a number of different Bonnie and Camille fabric lines. I’m so pleased with how it turned out!

I’ve also updated the pattern making the layout much easier. I’ve included a layout guide and coloring page as well as pattern piece markers, making this quilt quicker and easier to put together.

A friend from my local quilt guild, Angie, also made a beautiful version using Tula Pink.

This pattern is now available in my Etsy shop in pdf & paper versions. I hope you like it as much as I do!
