The post Scrappy Twists & Turns Quilt Pattern: A Stash-Busting Favorite You’ll Love! first appeared on FOUR ROBBINS.
]]>I originally designed this pattern years ago, using Angela Walters’ first fabric line, and I loved how it turned out. That quilt was gifted as a wedding present, and, of course, I immediately planned to make another one for myself.
Five years ago, I finally did—and went scrappy this time! I shared it back then, but I know many of you are new here, so let’s take another look at this favorite quilt and the updates I’ve made to the pattern since.

For my second version of Twists & Turns, I went for a scrappier feel, pulling fabrics from multiple Bonnie & Camille collections. Mixing prints gave the quilt a completely new personality, and honestly, I think scrappy quilts always have a little extra magic.
One of the best things about this pattern? It works beautifully whether you’re using a curated fabric line or digging into your fabric stash for a scrappy look!
Since I first released Twists & Turns, I’ve updated the pattern to make the process even smoother:
A layout guide for easier assembly
A coloring page to plan your fabric placement
Pattern piece markers for better organization
These updates make it faster and easier to put together—perfect for quilters who love a good project without the stress.
One of my favorite things about this pattern is seeing how others make it their own! My friend Angie from my quilt guild made a version using Tula Pink fabrics, and it’s stunning. Seeing different fabric choices bring this quilt to life in so many ways never gets old. Want to make your own Tula Pink fabric version? True Colors and and Besties would be perfect.

The Scrappy Twists & Turns Quilt Pattern is available in downloadable PDF in my Etsy shop. Stay tuned for paper copies in the near future. Whether you’re revisiting this pattern or discovering it for the first time, I hope you love making it as much as I did!

]]>I had people asking me about a pattern and I loved it, too, so I decided to go ahead and write the pattern and make a Christmas themed quilt. I love how it turned out, don’t you? I had it folded in half across the back of the couch over Christmas and it looked so nice and festive and made me happy every time I walked into the room.
When it was time to pack up Christmas, I was bummed to put this quilt up. It is just so pretty! So I decided to make one for Valentine’s Day and it goes perfectly with all my Valentine’s Day Pillows of the Month! But I’m thinking I’ll need to make one more to keep out all year long. It uses no waste flying geese and sews up in a day. I made this Valentine quilt over a weekend.
You can, too, and the pattern is 30% off all this month!
I did all-over swirls, hearts, and double hearts on my Janome 8900 for the quilting design. It is one of my favorites to do. I also did my binding by machine this time, attaching it in the back, folding it over to the front, and then I used a decorative stitch to finish sewing my binding on.
I also shared on Instagram recently that when I designed my Christmas Cards quilt to send into magazines in the hopes of getting published, I designed it as Christmas Cards and as Love Notes. The magazine wanted the Christmas theme so that’s what I made. However, I still had these designs so I thought I’d share them. They are so cute! You can find the pattern here. I’ve added this to my ToDo list for next year.
If you’re looking for something a little quicker, my Valentine Pillows are just the thing: three pillow patterns (or 16″ quilt blocks if you’d rather).
Finally, I made these adorable little bags. They are really quick to make and perfect for your Valentine’s gifts. You can find the tutorial here.

]]>I was asked a number of times about where I found the pattern, so I finally wrote one in 2018. We tend to like large quilts since everyone in my family is tall, so I wrote the pattern in two sizes. The throw version is 56″ x 63″ and the larger quilt is 70″ x 84″.
Since Sphere was no longer available, I decided to make a scrappy version so you could use any fabrics you like. I made this one in the larger size and my very patient husband held it while I took many, many photos!
One of my quilting buddies, Annie Cook, tested it and made one as a gift. It turned out super cute! She is a wonderful longarm quilter in the St. Louis area if you’re looking for someone! You can see her amazing work on Instagram @aecquilts.
And finally, I had gotten a bundle of Lavish by Katarina Roccella for Art Gallery Fabrics and wanted to do a version where the lights in the lanterns were all different colors rather than just the yellow. This fabric line is just gorgeous.
I quilted it with loops and stars.
And used this adorable lightening bug fabric to go along with it.
Here they are hanging in St. Louis Modern Quilt Guild quilt shows!
It the first one is now in it’s permanent home with the mom of one of my old friends, who was one of the many, many victims of Hurricane Harvey.
If you’d like to make one yourself, Paper Lanterns is a fun quilt to make and is beginner friendly. You can find it in my Etsy shop! #paperlanternsquilt

]]>They are perfect for beginners and advanced sewists alike. They are scrap friendly and you can complete them in just a couple of hours! The patterns are all live in my FourRobbins Etsy shop and are available as an instant PDF download.
This first pattern is the Patchwork Heart Pillow Cover. This one is perfect for using up lots of scraps. Just pick your color palette and start sewing! The patterns include all your cutting and sewing instructions as well as finishing your pillow cover with a hidden zipper and adding binding for a nice, clean finish. You can make them as is for a standard 16×16 pillow or add a border to accommodate larger pillow forms. As for the pillow inserts, I’ve gotten them at Joann Fabrics using a 40% off coupon as well as on Amazon.
Next is XOXO Hugs & Kisses pillow cover. I made this one in reds and blacks but you could really make any of these pillows in other colors to keep around all year or in favorite colors for a bedroom pillow. Hmmm… I just might have to make some in blues for MY bedroom.
Next, is my favorite, Rainbow Heart pillow cover. I love a rainbow! I was thinking of doing some of these in some ombre, with colors or tones that shade into each other. Stay tuned.
I hope you love these fun patterns as much as I loved creating them! You can find them on sale for 20% off their already low price through February 14th! Enjoy!

]]>Last year was rough all around. There was so much fear and pain and frustration and anger and loss with us and all over the world. And so many things changed. We also had a few good things. Tom had both his hips replaced, one in February and one in August. It’s hard to believe watching him now when we walk our dogs that this time a year ago he had difficulty walking to the other room and was living with chronic pain. He worked so hard through his physical therapy and is moving around better than ever. Andi was accepted into and begins the nursing program this semester. Sam started college and is doing really well with school. We got a new puppy, Gracie, who is super energetic and has really gotten us moving!
For me, I went back to school to work toward a career change. It has been exciting and has kept me really busy. I wasn’t able to spend as much time creating as I would have liked last year, but I did manage to make some fun things!
I have a quite a few pillow patterns but these Valentine Pillows are my favorites of the bunch and live on my couch most of the time. You can find the patterns for these pillows here to make some for yourself!
And of course, like all of you, made some masks.
I did some bee blocks for my Sew Bee It quilting bee friends. I sure miss being able to meet with them all in person! I also have a handful I need to catch up on this month!
I joined in with some Sashiko sewalong fun with @surrur_sunday and @amandalovestocreate on Instagram. These coasters are still on my WIP list.
But I did finish a couple cute bags as well!
I made some fun drawstring bags for goodies. They are super quick and so cute. You can find a tutorial and make your own here!
I also made a valentines day version of my Flying Home quilt pattern. I love this pattern and making 8 half-square triangles at a time makes this quilt a very quick make! You can find the pattern 40% off now through Valentines day!
I made a Sew Kind of Wonderful Metro Hoops quilt. The fabrics are Kona white and red cottons and April Rosenthal‘s All Weather Friend. I love how it turned out and I really enjoyed making it. Sew Kind of Wonderful’s pattern instructions were very clear. This quilt was gifted to someone special.
With the left over All Weather Friend fabrics, I made a free pattern by by Happy Zombie called Lawnchair Quilt. I used Essex Linen for the backing fabric. I love how it turned out. It’s one of my favorites. The linen background really makes it.
I also put out a new quilt pattern, Pinwheel Star. My friend and neighbor was nice enough to hold my quilt for some photos. This was also a quick quilt to make. I used white Kona and Mister Domestic‘s Loved to Pieces fabric line. The link above will take you to a digital copy. If you’d like a paper pattern, let me know. This quilt was also gifted to someone special.
I also started working on a large version of Sew Kind of Wonderful’s Metro Rings Quilt for our daughter, Angela. I’m suing a light gray and darker gray Kona cottons and two neutral jelly rolls including a Blueberry Park Neutrals by Karen Lewis.
I did a little home sewing by making some cushions for our patio table. I just kind of winged it with these making upper and lower cushions and adding ties. I used an outdoor fabric to make it last longer.
I also participated/am still participating in a Traveling Quilt Bee. This has been fun. Each person makes a starter block and sets their theme, color, style parameters. Then each person in the been takes a turn and adds to your quilt. This was the first I worked on for my friend Gayle. I added the top, bottom, and sides. Gayle’s quilt parameters had to do with color and styles.
Next was Annie’s quilt. I added the left column and the bottom with the bear paw prints. Annie’s parameters were our interpretations of her travels she had taken.
Finally, I added the top and bottom rows to Marie’s quilt. Marie’s parameters were more classic style blocks and using her Cotton and Steel fabric collection.
I have two more quilts to work on and will share them when I finish!
I also did a little crocheting and finished this Earl Gray Wrap by Two of Wands. Alexandra has some gorgeous knit and crochet patterns.
Finally, I made a quick tree skirt and extra large stockings with some fleece I had on hand. I didn’t really use any patterns. For the skirt, I cut a large circle. I folded it into qurters and cut out a center circle and then cut along the radius I bound all the edges with left over binding from Tom’s quilt from a few years ago.
For the stockings, I taped together some printer paper and then traced a stocking. I cut out the stocking way bigger then the outline and just stitched up wrong side. I folded the top over twice and top stitched and added a wired ribbon for the loop to hang them up.
I also got into a little cake baking and decorating. I have so much to learn but it has been fun. Here are a few of my yummy creations.
Anyway, that’s about it for my creative round up. Now, to finish planning out my projects for this year!
Have a great day!
Krista

]]>It was a pretty exciting experience. I came up with the design in publisher using some classic quilt blocks and then played around with different fabrics. I had fallen in love with these Baby Jane fabrics by Eric & Julie Comstock for Moda Fabrics
and really wanted to find something to make using the reds and aquas of the line.
Aren’t these pretty? I wish they were still available. I’d love to make another quilt with them!
I did a few versions to test it out my numbers scrappy and in Bonnie & Camille’s April Showers.
Once I knew all my measurements were good and everything was working out, I wrote up my pattern. Then I went ahead and cut into my Baby Jane fabrics and made my quilt from my pattern.
My finished top was so beautiful!
All basted and ready to be quilted! I like to pin baste. How about you? How do you baste?
I free motion quilted it with an all over stipple pattern. For this quilt, I was using my domestic Janome Memory Craft 4900. Now, I sew on a Janome Memory Craft 8900. I can’t tell you how much more I love that larger throat space and the automatic thread cutter. How did I do without them?
I pieced the back with my leftover fabric and some extra blocks. I had an embroidery sewing machine at the time so I did a fancy label. It was a fun machine but at the time, my son needed a new computer and we were tight on extra $ so I sold it to get him his desktop set up. He has gotten way more use out of his computer than I would have out of the embroidery though so it was worth it!
Next, I got some volunteers to test my pattern. They all did a great job and were so appreciated!
Zrinka from Owls and Co finished hers and it blew me away. She also took lots of beautiful pictures.
Her color choices were bright and fun and modern. I still want to make one like this!
It is the coolest thing to see what people come up with with your patterns! I also found this one searching the internet one day by Carol M. Clemmons. How pretty!
Since then I made some little version of the blocks and turned them into pin cushions. You can find these in my Shop.
And Star Crossed even got to be in St. Louis Modern Quilt Guild‘s first quilt show!
Want to make one of your own? You can find the pattern in my Shop in pdf and paper versions.

There is really so much going on in it and I could probably come up with so many more things and, in fact, I have a couple in mind. What I really focused on, though, were all the bright colors and the uneven gray tiles on the ground.
It was no surprise to me that my first drawing was symmetrical and a little rigid but I really wanted to step out of my comfort zone so I tried something else and I’m so happy with how it turned out!
If you’d like to make your own, the fabric requirements, cutting instructions, and layout follows. This quilt measures 60″ x 60″. If you’d like to print the cutting instructions and chart, you can find a printable pdf here. You can print out a sheet of pattern piece markers here.
Fabric Requirements & Cutting Instructions

2) Following layout, construct the 5 inner columns as shown.
