Every quilter has a project that changes everything—the one that’s more than fabric and thread. For me, that quilt is Star Crossed.
Back in 2014, I drafted this pattern in Publisher by combining the crisp geometry of the Ohio Star block with the connected rhythm of the Irish Chain. That single sketch became the first pattern I ever wrote, tested, and sold—and it launched the path that became Four Robbins.

My First Star Crossed Quilt
The original quilt was stitched with Baby Jane by Eric & Julie Comstock for Moda Fabrics. The reds and aquas of that line made the design sparkle—and though the fabric is now hard to find, it remains one of my all-time favorites.
I quilted it on my Janome Memory Craft 4900 with a free-motion stipple, pin-basting everything on my dining room floor. That machine served me well, but today I sew on the Janome Memory Craft 8200—and I can’t imagine going back. The larger throat space and automatic thread cutter make quilting so much smoother. If you’re looking to upgrade your machine, I have loved my Janome machines.
Why Quilters Love This Pattern
Star Crossed continues to be a favorite because it’s approachable, versatile, and fabric-friendly.
- Skill Level: Confident beginner – clear step-by-step diagrams.
- Fabric Friendly: Works beautifully with fat quarters, curated bundles, or scraps.
- Multiple Sizes: Baby, throw, and bed included.
- Classic + Modern: Rooted in tradition, but fresh in any fabric.
✨ Quilting supplies I use:

- Quilt Ruler Set for squaring blocks
- Warm & Natural Batting for soft, long-lasting quilts
- Aurifil Thread for piecing and quilting
Creative Versions & Community Makes
When I first released Star Crossed, I sent it to pattern testers. Their versions blew me away and showed just how flexible this design can be:
- Shauna Trueblood – soft neutrals for timeless elegance.
- Monica Smith – bold brights for a playful, modern look.
- Kyndra Brown – a cheerful, vibrant finish.
- Zrinka of Owls and Co – fearless color contrasts with modern flair.
I’ve also seen quilters scale down the blocks for pincushions, mini quilts, and samplers. This adaptability makes it one of those patterns you’ll want to sew more than once.
